Research has shown that the dynamics of growth at the base of the economic pyramid in emerging markets have created significant opportunities to unlock value. 4.5 billion people in developing countries are living on $8 a day or less and constitute a $5 trillion consumer market; thus there is a huge population and consumer base that can be harnessed for impact and profit. Any company seeking to do impact this key segment of society must innovate to meet the needs of this underserved market.
Innovation is directed towards adapting existing products to customers who have fewer resources or a different cultural background and establishing basic market ingredients such as distribution channels from the ground up. Companies that are able to confront these issues have often been able to achieve strong market share and profit growth. Businesses now more than ever have to act as a force for good if they wish to attain sustainable growth.
The international sustainability conference is an annual dialogue-to-action forum hosted by Lagos Business School Sustainability Centre that brings various stakeholders together to advance sustainable development through business. This conference is a platform to inspire business leaders to embed sustainability and responsible business practices in their strategy and operations to result in positive impacts not only on business performance but on the society as well.
This conference highlights the means and opportunities for sustainable business to an audience of corporate executives and other stakeholders in the public sector and civil society. Speakers and contributors will share positive opportunities to set business strategy and transform markets – in line with the 17 Global Goals and their 169 component targets – to deliver the practical solutions needed to protect the planet’s resources and leave no one behind.
