The International Sustainability Conference (ISC) is an annual dialogue-to-action forum hosted by Lagos Business School Sustainability Centre (LBSSC) that brings various stakeholders together to advance sustainable development through business. This conference is a platform to inspire business leaders to embed sustainability and responsible business practices in their strategy and operations to result in positive impact not only on business performance but on the society as well. As the 2023 edition draws near, and the road to SDGs 2030 and Africa Agenda 2063 even closer, the ISC will beam its headlights on the role of leadership across sectors in delivering results and the levers of action it must employ in critical sectors to generate ripple effects that impact not only business performance but cascade into the larger society as a whole.

Why Leadership Imperative for Sustainable Development?

In today’s world, the need to optimise scarce resources can not be overstated. This has placed front and centre the importance of sustainability, with urgent demands for organisations and society as a whole to prioritise it. In doing so, the responsibility falls squarely on the shoulders of leaders. Through their vision and guidance, leaders have vested powers to shape the thinking of their organisations and communities, set them on a trajectory, and integrate sustainability into their core values and practices.

The change, innovation and level of adoption sought to gain pan-African momentum is a direct consequence of leadership. The quality of leadership is directly correlated to the quality of information which bears on the quality of decision making. Overall, the extent of engagements and texture of collaboration in addressing complex challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and social inequality will create the collective effort towards sustainable development. This collaborative approach allows for a critical mass to harness diverse perspectives, expertise, and resources to innovate for a sustainable future.

Needless to say, leadership is crucial for setting the stage for the continent’s sustainable future. By prioritising sustainability, driving change, fostering collaboration, and embracing innovation, leaders have the power to create a lasting impact and contribute to the well-being of our continent. Let us embrace leadership and work together towards a sustainable future for all of us on the continent.
